One, two, three...

Movement in GW2 is a slight challenge for me. I am used to sending my arrows out and watching the rain of pain add up on my foes. Here sums up my very first few hours of playing the BWE#1- curstdangnabbit, where the hell is the w key, no no no no no no no move back you slackjawed nimbwitt, for the love of pete and his pony would you please stop moving, ohh wait? I can shoot AND move??, move move move obstructed my butt!!- And other more raunchy sayings that I will gladly leave to your imagination.

I think that it is the conditioning that I have from GW1 that is my biggest hurdle to jump. I mean, spending so much time casting then moving then pulling then moving and casting has really put my reflexes in the tuber. To combat this, I have been doing the following to get my 'movement sense' up and running at full throttle!

1-Battlefield 1943, Xbox 360.
Now you may be wondering what playing a first person shooter has to do with playing GW2. The way I see it is that the same reflexes are needed to dodge and to learn how to be fluid with shooting while moving. It is working in 43 so far...I am almost a General of the Army!

2-Replaying GW1
I am going in and just getting used to the keyboard/mouse dual action needed to move without feeling like I am running around in circles. My old standard of using the arrow keys to move is just not going to cut it anymore. So practice W+HoldRightClick to move direction it is.

3-Listening to the below. Because I can.

What are your plans for getting ready to move and groove in GW2??

  1. To be honest, I played a hunter in WoW and learned to kite. I've been able to apply the same strafing principle in e GW 2 betas quite effectively if I'm playing a ranged profession. However, melee is a little more challenging and hard to kite so the dodging comes into play more. I really hope they increase the amount Merle can dodge versus ranged

    1. Melee....melee not Merle. Lol!

    2. I dunno, I kind of wish Merle would dodge more, too. Tired of reviving him all the time.

    3. Lol! Melee Merle manages messy melee mangle!

    4. Okay that gives me a great idea. I'm going to make a Charr warrior named Merle. Merle Mangler maybe? Hmmm. Either way it is simply to choice. :)

  2. I was going to play some single player RPGs - after all, you had to be your own tank, heals and DPS in single player just as you have to be in GW2 - but I actually started to get the hang of it. I just have to periodically remind myself that I can actually cast and move at the same time, and that I (usually) don't have to press 1 and that I won't stop damaging in the mean time while I'm trying to place a targeted skill.

    1. It has been a hoot playing 43. My hunny suggested it when I told him about the new combat system. Now if only 43 had auto target I would be an unstoppable killing machine.
Oblivion is also a good rpg to play for that, the spells are fun and roasting goblins never gets old!

  3. In the first beta weekend I had a lot of problems remembering that I should dodge and keep moving too... Which led me to be get pretty acquainted with the ground. I think by now I can ask all the insects and other critters that crawl in the ground how their family are doing without getting weird looks by them anymore.

On the second one things were better for the most part. I don't know if it was because of the UI change, because of all the... uh... training, let's put it that way, during the first beta weekend or something in the water during those days. I still kissed the ground a lot just felt like it was less than the first beta weekend. Besides that I haven't really been doing anything different.

I like your training plan better though. It sounds less painful. If not at least it has a very appropriate soundtrack at least.

    1. Being a child of the 80's soundtrack is important! Raises the cool factor by a thousand!

This last BWE I don't think I fought hardly at all. I unlocked bunches of way points and hearts and just did some snooping.

By the way... anyone get into the aquarium in Divinity's Reach yet??

    2. Very wise words.

And I am afraid I don't know anything about an aquarium there. I've been more busy fighting stuff to get a feel from each class than exploring. Maybe on next BWE I will take some time to explore Divinity's Reach properly.

    3. Towards the back end there is a walk through aquarium. Despite my best efforts to jump in or fall in alas I have been thwarted...I will find my way in there. Next time I'll roll an engineer...
